'Gravity' Beats 'Captain Phillips' to Repeat as Top Film

"Gravity," the Warner Bros. (TWX) space thriller starring Sandra Bullock, collected $43.2 million to repeat as the top movie in U.S. and Canadian theaters this past weekend, following its record debut for an October film.

"Captain Phillips," a drama featuring Tom Hanks as a ship captain facing down modern-day pirates, took in $25.7 million for Sony Corp. (6758) to place second, Rentrak said today in an e-mailed statement.

Strong reviews and word-of-mouth have propelled "Gravity," about two astronauts cast adrift after an accident, at the box office and in the eyes of pundits weighing Oscar contenders. The market has room for both "Gravity" and the Hanks film, which also has won critical acclaim, according to Phil Contrino, chief analyst for researcher BoxOffice.com.

"These are two highly rated, well-respected movies that have both benefited" from positive reviews, said Paul Sweeney, a media analyst for Bloomberg Industries, in a telephone interview. "It just shows you that A-list stars can still drive movies in Hollywood."

Both films have been well received. At Rottentomatoes.com, which compiles movie reviews, 97 percent of critics rated "Gravity" "fresh," while "Captain Phillips" generated 95 percent positive reviews.

Anchoring "Gravity" are Bullock's performance and Alfonso Cuaron's direction, which uses 3-D effects to depict the sensation of being in space.

'Captain Phillips'

Bullock plays Ryan Stone, a new-to-space medical engineer, opposite George Clooney, a veteran astronaut who talks Stone through her panic when debris from a satellite hits the shuttle and damages it. The two are left floating in space and cut off from communications with Earth, while trying to make it to a space station before their oxygen runs out.

Made for $100 million, "Gravity" collected $55.8 million last weekend, a record for October, traditionally a quiet month at the box office. Over two weeks, the movie has brought in $122.3 million.

It's also lifted Time Warner Inc.'s studio to No. 1 in domestic sales this year, moving ahead of Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)'s Universal Pictures.

"Captain Phillips" is based on the true story of the hijacking of a U.S. cargo ship, the Maersk Alabama, by Somali pirates. It stars Hanks as Richard Phillips, the real-life captain of the ship.

Three Shots

Directed by Paul Greengrass, the British filmmaker behind the second and third films in the "Bourne" franchise from Universal, the movie casts the heroic figure of Phillips against the desperate plight of his captors.

After the ship was attacked by the pirates in April 2009, Phillips agreed to go with them to spare the crew. After five days in captivity, he was rescued from a lifeboat in the Indian Ocean as Navy snipers killed three pirates with three shots.

"Captain Phillips" was made for $55 million, according to researcher Box Office Mojo, and was projected to collect $21 million for Sony, according to BoxOffice.com.

The film "has a vital moral immediacy," wrote Manohla Dargis in the New York Times. The movie "deepens, brilliantly, unexpectedly, into an unsettling look at global capitalism and American privilege and power."

"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2," the animated sequel from Sony, dropped to third place from second, collecting $13.8 million. The movie, released on Sept. 27, has taken in $77.6 million to date in its domestic theatrical run.

'Runner Runner'

Another new movie, "Machete Kills," from Open Road Films, had sales of $3.84 million to place fourth. The action picture was projected to collect $7.5 million in its opening weekend, according to BoxOffice.com.

The follow-up to 2010's "Machete" from Twentieth Century Fox, it again stars Danny Trejo as Machete Cortez, a secret agent who is recruited by the U.S. president, played by Charlie Sheen, to stop a power-mad arms dealer, Mel Gibson.

The movie, which was directed by Robert Rodriguez and also features Cuba Gooding Jr., Antonio Banderas and Lady Gaga, faced critical reviews ahead of its opening, with just a 30 percent "fresh" rating from Rottentomatoes.

"Runner Runner," the online poker movie from Twentieth Century Fox, fell to fifth place after its debut in third last weekend, collecting $3.77 million.

Weekend revenue for the top 10 films fell 12 percent to $103.4 million from the year-earlier period, Rentrak said. Revenue year to date is up less than 1 percent to $8.41 billion.

The following table has U.S. movie box-office figures provided by studios to Rentrak. The amounts are based on gross ticket sales for Oct. 11 to Oct. 13.

"Gravity" won't be held down.

The Warner Bros. astronaut adventure directed by Alfonso Cuaron and starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney landed in the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Gravity" earned $44.3 million, raising its domestic total to $123.4 million.

"They say what goes up must come down, but that's not really true with 'Gravity,'" said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. "To have opened as big as it did last week and only drop 21 percent, that's really an amazing hold. It's a direct testament to the word of mouth on the movie."

Sony's "Captain Phillips" launched in second place with $26 million. The high seas drama directed by Paul Greengrass stars Tom Hanks as a cargo ship captain who is held captive by Somali pirates.

"We think the success of 'Gravity' will also bode well for 'Captain Phillips,'" said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony Pictures. "This is the extraordinary kind of film that we think audiences will flock to over the next several months moving forward."

The animated Sony movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" gobbled up third place in its third weekend with $14.2 million, bringing its domestic haul to $78 million.

The weekend's only other new release, "Machete Kills," opened in fourth place with $3.8 million. The gun-toting sequel from director Robert Rodriguez and starring Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez is the follow-up to "Machete," which earned $11.4 million when it opened in 2010.

Gravity Holds The US Box Office Top Spot With $44 Million

While some weren't sure whether Gravity's incredible visuals would translate into box office success, the film is now a bona fide hit, taking $44 million in its second weekend to top the box office once more. That's just a 20% drops, which is incredibly unusual for a film that took over $50 million in its first outing (indeed it's the best hold ever for such a film outside the holidays).

Gravity also had the second best weekend ever for IMAX, taking $9 million in that format, while 86% of the gross was for the 3D version, almost double what many of the summer's 3D openings had. It shows that if Hollywood can present something where viewers feel they're really getting something for a premium ticket, they will turn up. It's expected by the end of its run it'll be in the $250-300 million range, and perhaps beyond.

The Tom Hanks drama Captain Phillips ended up in second place with $26 million in its first three days. It's a pretty good start, ahead of the likes the Zero Dark Thirty and Argo, suggesting it'll be a real success by the end of its run, helped by great reviews.

The only other new movie in the top 10 was Machete Kills, which came in at number four with a verylacklustre $3.7 million. That's just a third of the first film's opening and one of the worst starts ever for a movie opening on more than 2,500 screens. It probably didn't help that while the marketing started with a bang, it went on for so long that any hype dissipated before it opened.

Outside the top 10, Romeo And Juliet, starring Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld, proved a major flop, taking just half-a-million.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of October 11th-13th.

'Gravity' makes one giant leap with record box office

Fueled by the strongest reviews of the year, Gravity hit the stratosphere at the box office this weekend, running rings around the latest thriller from Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake.

The Sandra Bullock outer-space saga collected $55.6 million, according to studio estimates.

The haul easily eclipsed analysts' projections of $35 million, and its near-unanimous positive reviews make it an early frontrunner in the awards race, analysts say.

Propelling sales: IMAX theaters, which accounted for $11.2 million, the biggest October opening for any film in the colossal format. Company CEO Greg Foster says that the bulk of the nation's 425 IMAX theaters have booked Gravity for the next month.

MORE: The weekend's top 10 films

"We have a special relationship with space films, beginning with our documentaries, and this is the kind of quality movie our audience expects," he says.

3-D acquitted itself well, too, as it accounted for 80% of ticket sales, according to distributing studio Warner Bros.

Gravity eclipsed the October debut record of Paranormal Activity 3, which opened to $52.6 million in 2011. The film earned an astounding thumbs-up from 98% of the nation's critics, according to survey site Rottentomatoes.com.

Fans were nearly as over the moon: 91% of moviegoers said they enjoyed the movie, directed by Alfonso Cuaron and co-starring George Clooney. Nearly 60% of the audience was 35 and up, and the movie scored an A- with moviegoers, according to pollsters CinemaScore.

Gravity had no trouble hitting box-office heights, despite the unpredictable nature of science fiction films - particularly original ones, says Tim Briody of Boxofficeprophets.com.

But the $100 million picture managed to combine " incredible effects, horror movie-style vibe - seriously, try and watch any scene from it without wanting to hold your breath - an A-list cast and ridiculously positive word-of-mouth to set everything up properly for the largest opening in months."

And it gives the fall season, which often sees sluggish ticket sales until Thanksgiving, critical momentum as studios try to catch last year's ticket sales pace.

"The real question at this point is how high it can go," says Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo.

Gitesh Pandya of Boxofficeguru.com says Gravity drew non-sci-fi fans in part with its high-powered stars, particularly Bullock, who has discovered 2013 is her lucky number. Earlier this year, her comedy The Heat opened to $39.1 million on its way to $159 million. Both Bullock and Clooney scored the highest debuts of their career this weekend.

"Bullock remains a major star, very likable and very bankable," Pandya says.

Affleck and Timberlake couldn't find their way to the bank this weekend as their crime thriller Runner Runner fell well below expectations. The only other newcomer of the weekend - which scored a miserable 8% approval rating among critics, Rottentomatoes.com says - mustered only $7.6 million, good for third place.

The animated comedy Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 took second place with $21.5 million, while the drama Prisoners took fourth with $5.7 million.

The Ron Howard racing film Rush rounded out the top five with $4.4 million.

Final figures are expected Monday.
