Gravity clings to top of box office
Gravity is still hovering at the top of the US box office.The space film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, raked in more than $44.2 million in its second week, according to early box office estimates.Alfonso Cuarón directed the feature, about a medical engineer and a veteran astronaut set adrift after debris disables their spacecraft, now boasts a two-week worldwide total of $191.4 million, surpassing its $100 million production budget.Paul Greengrass drama Captain Phillips debuted at two with $26 million.Tom Hanks stars in the feature, based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips, who in 2009 helmed the first American cargo ship to be hijacked by Somali pirates in 200 years.Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 slipped from second to third place with $14.2 million this week.The animated flick, which features the voice of Anna Faris, is the sequel to the original 2009 box office hit.Machete Kills debuted at four with nearly $3.8 million in earnings.The Robert Rodriguez sequel brings back Danny Trejo in the title role of Machete Cortez, a former Mexican Federal hired by the US government to take down an arms dealer.Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Mel Gibson and Lady Gaga also enjoy roles in the feature.Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake's Runner Runner fell from three to five with just over $3.7 million in its second week.The Brad Furman crime thriller stars the actors in the story of poor college student Richie Furst, played by Justin, as he confronts Ben's character, an online poker boss named Ivan Block, who thinks he's been cheated. © Cover Media Group 2013 Back
