Ride Along Tops US Box Office For The Third Week Running

By Jodie Packwood On February 3, 2014

Cop comedy Ride Along has topped the US box office for the third consecutive week.

The film, which stars Kevin Hart and rapper Ice Cube, managed to take $12.3m over the Super Bowl Weekend, bringing its total to $93million (£57m) since its release on January 17th.

Disney's latest animation, Frozen, came in second place taking $9.3million and playing to the Super Bowl crowd by adding new 'sing-along' shows to lure in families. Since its release in November 2013, the long-running Disney film's total has pushed more that $360m. Frozen is now the fourth highest grossing animated release in the US.

Yet while the US were enjoying Super Bowl weekend, it was thought that Zac Efron's outrageous comedy That Awkward Moment would have appealed to the teen crowd with a predicted $12million at the box office. Instead, the comedy only scraped $9million, $3million less than predictions.

Rounding off the top five were The Nut Job at four which took $7.6million and Lone Survivor at five with $7.2million.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Kate Winslet's Labor Day. The drama is an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's novel of the same title and tells the story of an escaped convict who takes refuge in the home of a depressed single mother. It only managed to take $5.3million though and ranked in seventh place. As a whole, the weekend was up slightly on last year's Super Bowl weekend.

Next week's release of 3D animation The Lego Movie is expected to knock Ride Along off the top spot.
